Biography
新英国雕塑运动的灵魂人物比尔·伍德罗(1948年生于英国牛津郡)于1980年代初期通过他的“剪出”雕塑而享誉国际。运用消费主义社会的废弃物为原料,沃德罗将捡回来的家电和五金转化为具诗意的超现实雕塑。1968至1971年间,他就读于伦敦中央艺术与设计学院(现在的中央圣马丁艺术学院),之后1971年在伦敦切尔西艺术学院读书。
在他的“剪出”雕塑中,伍德罗操控并转化家用电器的金属表面,成为另一个让人熟悉的物件,又不完全从原本的物件中剪断。比方说,一扇车门被做成一支猎枪,但两者仍然连着,同时也辨识得出各自是什么。对伍德罗来而言,从垃圾集中箱和垃圾场搜集材料不只是权宜之计,也是他作品中关键的不可预测性和生命力的来源。将形体由一个环境重新模拟为另一个,为伍德罗的作品增添了一个叙事的元素,并持续在他后期以青铜和焊接的钢作品中出现。
伍德罗于1990年代有意识性地开始尝试新的材料,而转向了青铜。艺术家的早期雕塑经常带有一种特殊的叙事,而这个说故事的特色也继续在他的青铜作品中扮演重要角色。伍德罗玩弄与青铜相关的形式隐含的意义,他的青铜雕塑于是经常审视历史的概念。这大概在艺术家于2000年受委托在特拉法加广场第四柱基制作的巨型作品〈无论历史〉中可以看得最清楚。满载各种象征,这件雕塑凸显了自然远超过文明的至高地位,以及人类仍然无法由前车之鉴记取教训。
沃德罗的首次个展于1972年在伦敦白教堂美术馆举行。1980年代初,他代表英国参加悉尼双年展(1982年)、巴黎双年展(1982及1985年)及圣保罗双年展(1983年),而1986年他被提名伦敦泰特美术馆的透纳奖。1988年他成为西雅图艺术博物馆安·嘉宝奖得主。2002年他获选为伦敦皇家艺术研究院院士。
之后他在伦敦的个展还包括于卡姆登艺术中心(1995年)、泰特美术馆(1996年)、南伦敦美术馆(2001年)。近期,2013年他还在伦敦皇家艺术研究院作了个展,题为“比尔·伍德罗皇家研究院”。伍德罗的作品散见于全世界公共收藏中,如纽约现代艺术博物馆、纽约大都会艺术博物馆、斯德哥尔摩当代美术馆、伦敦泰特美术馆等。
