Kenia Almaraz Murillo solo exhibition near Lille

'La Manufacture' in Roubaix, Lille hosts significant body of work

At 'La Manufacture', the Museum of memory and textile creation in Roubaix, Lille, a solo exhibition of works by Kenia Almaraz Murillo explores how the artist reconnects with her ancestral family knowledge of Bolivian weaving through her contemporary work. Exhibitions at La Manufacture invite visitors to discover human stories in in order to better understand the history of textiles in Roubaix and the greater Lille metropolitan area.

The museum writes: "From her first weavings, Kenia decided to incorporate light, in different forms. Woven, embroidered or even suspended in the middle of the pieces, this light passes through the compositions and imposes a rhythm on the works. Headlights from cars, scooters or trucks render certain pieces piercing and hypnotizing. Kenia's inspirations come from her dreams, which she transcribes and draws, as well as from Bolivian urban legends. She mixes these different references to compose a personal mythology imbued with symbolism."

On the occasion of the exhibition, Kenia invited artists Studio Élémentaires and Elliott Causse to present work alongside her own. Kenia and Causse collaborated on a new monumental fresco on the brutalist walls of the Pays de Roubaix sports hall, presented on the occasion of the 3rd edition of the Urban Cultures Festival (URBX).

Exhibition dates: 20 April–18 August 2024
