This publication accompanies Waddington Custot’s current exhibition in London, which marks the first time Hartung’s photographs have been shown in the UK. They are accompanied by paintings made over four decades to illuminate the dynamic cycle in which Hartung used photography to reaffirm his abstract tendencies in painting. The publication features rare photographs from the Fondation Hartung-Bergman, Antibes, interspersed amongst rich, full-colour plates of Hartung’s groundbreaking abstract paintings. An introduction by gallery director Louise Malcolm is supplemented by essays from Dr. Lena Fritsch, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Ashmolean Museum, and researcher Pauline Mari, an expert in Hartung’s photographic work.
