Fabienne Verdier to join the Pinakothek der Moderne Collection

Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich

Waddington Custot is pleased to announce the acquisition of seven Fabienne Verdier paintings by the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. The works, which all come from the series Mélodie du réel (2014) will join one of the most important collections of modern and contemporary art in Europe.

The acquisition follows the artist’s participation in the group exhibition Königsklasse II curated by Pinakothek der Moderne’s Chief Curator Corinna Thierolf, and held at the Palais Herrenchiemsee in Bavaria in July to September 2014. This exhibition was the second edition of the successful Königsklasse I andsaw Verdier’s work presented alongside renowned modern and contemporary artists such as Georg Baselitz, Joseph Beuys, John Chamberlain, Dan Flavin, Willem de Kooning, Sigmar Polke, Arnulf Rainer, Eugen Schönebeck and Andy Warhol who all feature in the Pinakothek der Moderne collection.

Like many of her recent works, the Mélodie du réel series is marked by the decade Verdier spent studying in China under several masters of calligraphy. The works are created painting vertically in ink, with the artist standing directly on her stretchers and using giant brushes and tools of her own invention suspended from the studio ceiling. Her practice combines Eastern concepts of unity, spontaneity and asceticism with the line, action and expression of Western painting.
