Maria Helena Vieira da Silva work goes up for auction at Sotheby’s
Tomorrow (11 February 2020), a significant work by Lisbon-born artist, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, will go on sale in Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Auction.
Vieira da Silva painted the work in question, L’Incendie II ou le Feu (The Burning II or the Fire), 1944, during her exile in Brazil, where she fled from Paris with her husband, the painter Árpád Szenes. During this time, between 1940 and 1947, Vieira da Silva produced only three works.
The work is estimated between 1,200,000-1,800,000 GBP, and is expected to tip Vieira da Silva’s record of £2m, which was achieved at Christie’s in 2018 for another canvas in the same series.
Maria Helena Vieira da Silva is on show at Waddington Custot until the 15 February 2020, before travelling to Di Donna Galleries in New York next month.
