This fully illustrated publication accompanies Waddington Custot’s current exhibition in London, which marks the first time March Avery’s paintings have been exhibited outside of the United States. Growing up in an artistic family but with no formal training, Avery has an instinctive approach to painting that is deeply personal. She takes a playful approach to colour, her paintings a celebration of the magic that happens when certain hues and shades meet one another. As a child surrounded only by artists, Avery considered no alternative to being a painter in her adult life, as she describes: “I didn’t know anybody who wasn’t an artist. I thought everybody was an artist”. Avery, who will be 90 years old this year, regularly paints six days a week, mostly from New York City.
